"Just tryin' to strike conversation." He mumbled, moving his hands behind his back, cracking his knuckles. A smile opened up on his face.

"You need to rest." She stuck her head out the door. There was no-one coming. She looked back at Gandal. "Why are you smiling like that?"

"You haven't answered my question yet." He asked, repeating his original question, "What is one thing I don't know about you?" Maybe it was more than just 'striking conversation' and mere curiosity. Nevertheless, Gandal wanted an answer. He was relentless.

Kai sighed. "I was adopted. I was beaten as a child and I can beat the snot out of almost anyone that wants to hurt me or someone else I care about." She looked at him sternly. "That's what you didn't know."

Gandal nodded slowly, processing the information, "What's your last name? Before you were adopted?" He looked straight into her eyes.

Kai held his gaze. "I never let my name be changed. Their name was Goldsmith. Mine is Freshman." She didn't know what else to say.

"Freshman..." His eyes widened slowly before he swished his hand through the air, his voice turning stern and the smile fading, "Go. Let me sleep."

Kai blinked. "What is it? Do you know my family?" She stood and kept her gaze on him. "I'll let you sleep. But can you please tell me when you wake?"

Gandal sighed, repeating himself, "Go!" His voice was almost a roar, becoming louder as anger flooded through his body.

Kai flinched at Gandal's sudden anger. She walked toward the door and stood in the doorway. She looked back at him. "Sleep well." With that she sit the door and stood outside.

Gandal nodded slowly before turning away, pretending to fall asleep. Her name lolled through his head repeatedly... running around in circles, blocking off every other thought. Kai Freshman.

Kai sat on a rail outside the warehouse. What had made Gandal sound so violent? Was it her name? What had she done? Questions just kept rising and swirling in her mind, creating a mental mini tornado that gave her a massive headache. Her head span and she almost fell over. Stay awake god dammit.

Morning came quickly and Gandal awoke with a small jolt. The sun blurted through cracks in the wall, slightly distorting his vision.

Kai opened the door to the room Gandal slept in for perhaps the five hundredth time that night. When she saw that Gandal was awake she stumbled inside. "Morining," she said rubbing her eyes. She fell to one knee and the gun fell out of her hand. She was so tired. She lay down before she fell down further. She shut her eyes and almost fell asleep as soon as her head hit the floor. She was exhausted and there were huge bags under her eyes. I'm exhausted, she thought.

Gandal stood and moved over to her, sighing, "There is something I need to tell you." He gulped, the harshness being drained from his voice abruptly and the anger from last night gone.

Kai opened her eyes but couldn't sit up. Her muscles wouldn't move very far. She frowned. "What is it?" she asked softly.

"You're my sister."

(Say WHAT?!)

Kai shot up. She screamed in pain as her muscles resisted her actions. She hit her head on the floor hard and some blood began to ooze from her wound. "Ouch," she moaned.

"Sorry..." He mumbled, ripping off part of his sleeve, cleaning her wound hastily. "I never got a chance to read your file... I only knew your first name. It all makes sense now... you were adopted."

"It doesn't make sense to me," she said, her words slurred a little. Her head hurt a lot now. The headache from the night before hadn't left yet and the pain became unbearable. Kai slipped into semi-consciousness.

Gandal took her hand, gripping it, "My... Our parents were killed by thugs... we were sent to orphanages and we never saw each other since." A tear slowly rolled down his cheek.

As Kai slipped back into consciousness, she looked at Gandal. "How... old were we?" she croaked. She wanted to know more. She didn't remember much from her childhood.

"You were only 6 months old, I was 8." He said, turning away, more tears rolling from his eyes.

She sat up slowly, propping herself on her shoulders. She managed to sit up enough to hug Gandal. "I knew there was something special about you," she whispered into his ear. "I just didn't know what."

Gandal pat her back, the tears being released, splashing against the ground. "I should've known." He chuckled.
