Kristina shook her head silently. "I've been trying to move my legs but it's no use... I really can't feel them..."

"Hm." Joseph murmured as he moved over to where she lay, poking her leg once with a finger, "Can you feel that?" He asked, frowning as he kneeled over her, running a finger over the numerous bruises she had received.

Kristina shook her head. "No, but I'm sure it would hurt like hell if I could."

"Okay..." He picked up on of the limp legs, "Do you think it's got something to do with the bones in the legs or the nerves?"

Kristina shook her head. "I don't know, maybe both."

"Okay." He murmured, placing her leg back on the ground, "I could try giving you a stilt which would help in the healing process, but we'd have to go back into the hospital." He said, looking back at the elevator shaft.

Kristina shook her head frantically. "No way are either of us going back in there."

"Then, you'll have to keep that as straight as possible, do you understand?" Joseph said, moving away from her, leaning his back against the rooftop ledge.

Kristina nodded. "Ok..."

He gave a nod as he looked up at the clouds, "Normally at this time, we'd be walking to school. Did you know that?" He released a chuckle, turning over onto his side as he exhaled loudly.

A few tears escaped Kristina's eyes and she nodded. "I know..."

"And how we'd normally get to school late..." He gave a chuckle, pressing both hands against his eyes as they began to prickle with tears, "Was it Math we had first up today? Or was it English?"

"English..." She said, looking away from him.

"Remember Mrs Kagney?" He grimaced at her name, "She was a horrible substitute teacher, always screeching at us like a hawk." Joseph let himself chuckle as he removed his hands from his eyes, placing them by his side.

Kristina only nodded.

Joseph looked back to her, "You may as well lighten up." He said giving a shake of his head as his eyes returned to the clouds above. "It's practically the end of the world, afterall. Being glum isn't going to help us."

Kristina let a few tears slip and didn't say anything.

Joseph looked back at her, "Sorry..." He said as he watched the tear fall to the concrete ground.

Kristina shook her head. "It's fine..."

Joseph eventually came to his feet, looking over the edge, "We should be right to go now." He muttered, looking back at the elevator shaft.

Kristina nodded and sat up.

"We're going to have to go back down the elevator shaft. The water's too shallow for jumping." Joseph said as he grabbed her hand, helping her to her limp feet before picking her up.

Kristina looked up at him then away. "You can leave me here..." She said.

"No. Don't even think of stuff like that." Joseph said, moving over to the ledge which led down to the gaping elevator shaft. He could just make out the elevator midway through the shaft, illuminated by a light which had survived the water.

Kristina looked away from him. "But all I am is a burden now that I can't use my legs. I might even get you killed..."
